7 Everyday Habits That Help Prevent Your Nails From Breaking

Simple ways to protect your acrylic, gel, and natural nails.

How can I stop my nails from breaking?

Start by keeping a practical length, avoiding using nails as tools, and getting lifting or cracks checked promptly. If an enhancement repeatedly breaks, ask your nail technician to assess its shape and support rather than simply adding bulk. Read how thin acrylic nails can still be strong and why acrylic nails lift.

Have you ever had a beautiful set of acrylic or gel nails, only to break one a few days later? Sometimes the problem isn't how your nails were done. It's the little things we do with our hands every day. As a nail technician, I remind my clients that beautiful nails need good daily habits.

1. Stop using your nails as tools

Your nails are not screwdrivers, bottle openers, or can openers! Avoid using them to open soda cans, scrape stickers, or pry things apart. Use the proper tool or the side of your finger instead.

2. Be careful with car doors and drawers

Watch where your nails go when opening car doors, drawers, and heavy doors. Catching a nail can crack the enhancement and injure your natural nail.

3. Use your finger pads when typing

If you wear longer nails, press buttons and type with your finger pads instead of your nail tips. This reduces unnecessary pressure on extensions.

4. Wear gloves when cleaning

Repeated water exposure and cleaning chemicals can be hard on hands and nails. Protective gloves help reduce exposure and protect your skin.

5. Choose a practical nail length

Long nails look beautiful but may not suit every lifestyle. If you work with your hands or frequently bump your nails, shorter almond, oval, or square nails may be more comfortable.

6. Don't pick at lifting nails

Never peel off lifting acrylic or gel or glue it back down yourself. Picking can remove layers of natural nail, and gaps can trap moisture. Ask your nail technician about a safe repair or removal.

7. Keep up with maintenance

As your natural nails grow, the balance of an enhancement changes. Many clients benefit from maintenance around every two to three weeks, depending on nail growth and product condition.

Kevin's professional advice

I work to make nails look thin and natural while placing strength where it's needed. Even a well-structured nail can break under enough force. Think of your nails like jewelry for your hands: enjoy them, but don't use them as tools.

If a nail breaks painfully, bleeds, or separates from the nail bed, seek appropriate medical care.
